Forests and Walks

THERE are 60,000 acres (23,000 hectares) of Forestry Commission land within the North York Moors National Park.  In contrast to much of the Park, this is land in public ownership and visitors are welcome to walk as they please in any area identified by the distinctive Forestry Commission signboard.

Dalby Forest

Dalby ForestThe largest forests are concentrated in the south-east of the National Park, between Pickering, Scarborough and Whitby.  Most popular, and as suitable for a short visit as a full day out, is the Dalby Forest Drive.  Approaching Low Dalby village from Thornton-le-Dale, the road dips away and the valley comes into view between the trees.  The forest itself contains signs of past settlers including burial mounds, linear earthworks (unknown purpose) and the remnants of a large rabbit warrening industry.

The visitor centre is a great place to begin your journey of exploration within this immense forest.  Located here is a Forestry Commission shop, educational meeting room, exhibition area, toilets and a restaurant in the treetops.  The visitor centre also sells maps and booklets with all the information regarding walks and cycle routes.

Opening hours for the Visitor Centre are 9.30am until 4.30pm, daily throughout the year.

Thornton-le-Dale is the nearest town or village.

Please enjoy your forests, their peace, scenery and wildlife, while you are on holiday in the North York Moors National Park.  Just one request: do not light fires of any sort in the forest and if you do spot a forest fire please dial 999 and report it to the Fire Brigade.

Falling Foss Forest Walk (Maybecks Trial)

Falling FossMaybecks, with grassy slopes clipped short by sheep and a shallow rocky stream, is a particularly pleasant spot for a picnic.  The Falling Foss itself is a dramatic waterfall, set in one of the finest broadleaved woodland valleys of the National Park.  However, as the valley and the forest walk climb towards the moors, oak and beech give way to scrub birch and finally the coniferous plantations of Sneaton High Moor.  The leaflet charts this succession, naming many of the trees and plants characteristic of each habitat type.  In spring the forest floor is carpeted with an array of wildflowers.

The Falling Foss Forest Walk is a pleasant day out from Whitby.  The car parks at Maybecks and Falling Foss are linked by a circular, marked walk for which a leaflet is available.

Whitby is the nearest town.
