North Yorkshire Moors Railway

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway has magnificent steam engines which travel through beautiful rural railway stations. With steam and smoke pouring from the engines, you will be looked after by smartly uniformed staff within the lovingly preserved and charming wood paneled authentic carriages.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is the perfect starting point for a day out, whether you are travelling between the rugged picturesque Yorkshire villages or spending a day by the seaside in Whitby.

Steam Train Destinations

Whitby:

Whitby is a great family day out, with its ancient abbey, stunning coastline, and delicious award winning fish and chips.

Grosmont:

Grosmont, the 1952 style British Railway station, is home to the engine sheds where the locomotives get some well-deserved restoration, partly funded by proceeds from the Shed Shop. It's also the junction with the main rail network, and home to one of the railways traditional tea rooms.

Goathland:

The famous 'celebrity' station, Goathland is also known as Aidensfield in YTV's Heartbeat and as the bewitching Hogsmeade in the first Harry Potter Film. Visit the charming village, just a few minutes walk from the station, or enjoy a cup of tea in the 1922 style tea room.

Newton Dale Halt:

Having carved your way deep through the rugged dales, make a special request for the Guard to stop at this tiny, picturesque halt. With access to the nearby National Park, it's the perfect place to start your walk and spot some magnificent wildlife.

Levisham:

Levisham is a 1912 style station, accessible by one solitary hill road and surrounded by the magnificent Yorkshire Moors. It's also home to an Artist in Residence whose studio is open whenever trains run and the cosy camping coach - the perfect base for a Moorland walking holiday. Enjoy a snack from the Weighbridge Tea Hut at weekends.

Pickering:

With its smart 1930s decoration and charming village atmosphere, Pickering is the perfect start to your steam train adventure. This station is also home to one of the railways traditional tea rooms, serving freshly baked scones, pies and pasties throughout the day.
