St Mary's Church

St Mary's Church is accessible by means of the famous 199 steps (The Church Stairs) which have recently been refurbished.  Another way to reach St Mary's Church and its surrounding graveyard is to use the Donkey Path (a steep cobble stoned path), both access points offer some of the best views of Whitby and its coastline.  At the very top of the steps you can see Caedmon's Cross which is a memorial dedicated to one of the earliest English poets (Caedmon).

The Parish Church of St Mary is surrounded by tombstones; it has undergone many alterations during its 900-year history.  The interior of St Mary's is Georgian with galleries, pew boxes, and a triple decker Pulpit.  The church also has an Elizabethan altar table, memorial plaques, coat of arms and wall paintings.

The church is still used by locals to this day for Sunday services and the town's official functions.
