Captian Cook Memorial

Museum

Walkers HouseThe Captain Cook Memorial museum is a historic 17th century building situated on the harbour side - Walkers House.  The young James Cook lived here whilst serving his seaman's apprenticeship.  The museum itself is the only remaining building, which has connections with Cook.  The handsome 17th century house belonged to Cook's master, the Quaker shipowner, John Walker.  It was in the attic at this house, where the young James Cook lodged when he was not at sea serving the London coal trade up and down the coast.

The museum's rich collections cellebrate Cook's astonishing achievements and the work of those who sailed with him - the sailors, scientists and artists alike.  The collections includes period rooms, 1752 models, manuscripts and maps, artefacts from voyages and many original oil paintings, drawings and prints.  Every year the museum stages a special exhibition in the attic.

Facilities: Wheelchair access to the first floor.  DVD of upper floors.  Gift shop.  Note: Photography not allowed in the museum.
