Whitby Lifeboat Museum

Whitby LifeboatThe Whitby lifeboat museum is situated at the end of Pier Road on the west side of town.  Built in 1895 and used by the RNLI up until 1957 the double boathouse is now a museum.  Since 1957, the museum has collected an incredible amount of materials including paintings, models, photographs, medals, lifeboat kits and other items of interest.

On display is the historic pulling and sailing, self-righting lifeboat, which was built in 1919 by Robert and Ellen Robson. Personal tales are told through mementos from wrecked ships and individual accounts of the rescued.  The museum also has information about the famous Coxswains Henry Freeman and Tom Langlands.

The museums main exhibit is the last working pulling lifeboat to be used by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

The Whitby Lifeboat Museum is free but donations are welcome.

Open from Monday to Sunday including Bank holidays.  Groups and school visits welcome by appointment.
