Whitby Museum

Ammonite Fossil 200 million years old At Whitby museum you can explore an amazing collection of local fossils, natural history, model ships, carved jet, toys, costumes, and social history.  There are relics of the Scorsesbys - famous whaler's - and Captain Cook.  Ship's captains of the past have brought back to the museum many unusual things from the seven seas. 

Whitby Museum was started by local gentlemen in 1823 to preserve the fossils and other interesting artefacts existing in the area.  Whitby museum is an independent volunteer-run museum, owned and operated by  Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society. (Founded in 1823)

The Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9.30 to 4.30 (also Bank Holiday Mondays).  Whitby Museum is entered through the Pannet Art Gallery in Pannet Park.  Small entrance charge.  Free to permanent residents of Whitby Town.

Facilities: Shop, cafe, Disabled and evening entrance at the rear.
